Why a Kitchen Table Conversation?!
The quality of democratic representation in Jagajaga is obstructed by the lack of incentive of the
major parties to put the interests of us, their constituents, above the interests of their parties.
Voices of Jagajaga are working to achieve better engagement and representation in our electorate,
and this starts with listening to what is important to the people of Jagajaga. This process is done by
holding Kitchen Table Conversations 1 (KTC).
The Community Independents Project 2 (CIP) formed to elect Cathy McGowan to the Federal seat of
Indi in 2013. Since then, the number of CIP electorates has grown to 21 with 9 Community
Independents elected to parliament.
The CIP is challenging the old two party system, and offering people a real democratic alternative.
How do KTCs work?
Groups of around nine people meet to discuss and answer questions around five key themes. The
responses are recorded and sent back to the core group who summarise them into a report which is
shared with all who participated.
This report of the voice of the Jagajaga electorate is then used to identify and be a reference for a
suitable candidate, in the meantime increasing the pressure on our incumbent MP for better
representation.
We need you and your networks!!
Of course, to speak for everyone, it’s very important that the conversations include people from
every corner of the electorate. Hearing many voices will get the best result and there are two ways
you can help:
- Register to attend a conversation, and spread the news to your friends and family, bring
them with you.
- Host a conversation with members of your own networks. With your parent’s group, scouts,
sports club, ethnic group, book group, neighbours? The list is only limited by your
imagination. It doesn’t have to be in your kitchen. How about a café, library, rotunda or any
public place?
You can register as a host or as a particpate on our Registration page. Please do not forget to complete the Kitchen Table Conversations Box.
